Renewable energy can reduce global warming, climate change and pollution. And it can offer a better environment for the future. So get involved and start taking action now to protect our future!
Greater reliance on local renewable sources of energy will provide better energy security for the long term and create many more local jobs. At the same time it can empower communities by giving them greater control over the energy they need in order to thrive.
What are the issues?
Energy is a finite resource. A few decades ago 90% of UK electricity came from coal fired power stations but by 2004 this had dropped to 35%, overtaken by the more abundant and cheaper natural gas (37%).However, UK natural gas reserves are running out and by 2014 over two thirds of gas could be imported from Norway, but eventually from less secure sources such as Russia or Iran (If... The Lights Go Out, BBC, 2004). As national reserves of coal, oil and gas continue to run out around the world this may lead to conflicts over dwindling resources. Not only this but the consumption of fossil fuels is affecting our climate. To listen to Tom Mangold's eye-opening programmes about the rush for the last oil reserves and possible new forms of hybrid cars go to the Radio Four website.
So what are the alternatives?
There are two main parts to the solution.
Energy Eficiency
Saving energy is as easy as turning a light switch off when the room is not in use or turning the thermostat down by 1°C. A free home energy check is available from the Energy Saving Trust that will show you how to save energy and money by as much as 20%! More
