PERMACULTURE ARRIVES IN LINCOLN

By Nic Lance

On 5 April, Chris Chidlow - a permaculture tutor from York – came to Lincoln to give an introduction to Permaculture gardening.  He gave a mixture of theory and practical advice together with some DVDs of inspiring Permaculture projects around the world.

A group visited Janis’ uncultivated Long Leys allotment to “tune in” and develop our observational skills – the first step before beginning any Permaculture design.

So what is Permaculture?  The brainchild of two Australians, Bill Mollinson and David Holmgren, Permaculture is about working with Nature and harnessing it rather than fighting it.  ‘Earth Care, People Care and Fair Share’ sums it up in an organic nutshell.  We were also introduced to the idea of ‘guild plants’.  These are plants which work well together in groups and complement each other – a developed form of companion planting.

Janis would eventually like her allotment to become a Permaculture demonstration allotment using Permaculture principles and would be grateful for any helping hands.  She would be also be willing to share her allotment if worked on Permaculture lines. Email Janis: terrafirma00@hotmail.com

For future events, including a possible Permaculture Design workshop organised by Urban PIGS (Permaculture interest group) email Kate Bell at kate.bell@lincoln.gov.uk
